THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING AUDIO VISUAL MEDIA TOWARD STUDENTS’ WRITING SCORES OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH PALANGKA RAYA

The principle purpose of the study was intended to measure the effectiveness of using audio visual media on the students’ writing scores in narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The writer used quantitative approach with quasi- xperimental design. The population of the study consisted of five classes with the total number of students was 110 students. The sample was determined using cluster sampling technique.
The sample of the study were XI IPA 1 class as the experimental group that consisted of 25 students and XI IPA 2 class as the control group that consisted of 24 students. The techniquefor collecting the data used test and documentation.
The writer analyzed the data from experimental group and control using ttest formula to test the hypothesis stated. The result of the data analysis showed that tobserved = 3.438 was higher than ttable = 2.01 at 5% level of significance with the degree of freedom (df) = 47. It showed that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) stating that the audio visual medium gives effect toward the students’ writing scores in narrative text of the eleventh grade students at SMA Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya was accepted, meanwhile the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected.
Based on the finding in the study, it was recommended that the English teacher teach writing using audio visual media. The significant result from the effectiveness measurement of this audio visual media could be taken as the basic to use this media in solving the students’ difficulties in writing. With this media, expect to students’ comprehension more in writing through the score of writing would be better. Along with the increase in students’ writing skill, it was expected that students’ other skills improve.
