THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURE MEDIA ON SPEAKING SKILL OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH I PALANGKA RAYA

The study is aimed at measuring the effect of using picture media on speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya. The study includes quantitative paradigm with experimental design. The writer designed the lesson plan, conducted the treatment and observed the students’ scores by pretest and posttest. The population of study is the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya which consisted of five classes. Class X-4 was chosen as the experiment group and class X-1 was chosen as the control group, based on the sample of study which is determined by using cluster random sampling technique.
After getting the data that were from pretest the writer analyzed the data using t-test. Based on the result pretest analysis -ttable >tobserved> ttable = (-2.021)>0.163>2.021. It meant the data was normal. On posttest, the writer analyzed the data using ttest formula to test the hypothesis stated. Based on the result of analysis, it was found that the value of tobserved = 2.785 and the ttable =2.021 at significant level 5% and degree of freedom= 42. It showed that the tobserved was higher than the ttable. The result of testing hypothesis determined that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) stating that teaching speaking using picture media gives significant effect on speaking skill of the tenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) stating that that teaching speaking using picture media doesn’t give significant effect on speaking skill of the tenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya was rejected. It was meant that Picture media gave significant effect speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah I Palangka Raya.
